The first album Promise garnered universal praise; was described by Word magazine as ‘one of the more remarkable efforts of recent times’, by Rough Trade as ‘a stunning debut’ and was a Sunday Times record of the week. A False Parade is better yet, emotional but controlled, electric guitar-led with acoustic warmth, it combines intelligence and anger with wit and poetry as once again, Johnny brings a fierce intellectual examination to songs from his soul.
Having courted notoriety as singer/song writer with 90’s indie press-darlings Fin, Johnny went on to write and produce radio and TV comedy before turning his hand to film, writing and directing the extraordinary feature Acts of Godfrey that has its premiere at the 2011 Raindance Festival and is due to go on general release in early 2012. A False Parade was written and produced concurrently and shares many of the film’s themes of misrepresentation, belief and decay. The album was recorded and produced by Johnny, features ex-Bowie and Iggy Pop sideman Kev Armstrong on guitar and was mixed by in San Francisco by long-time Tom Waits engineer Karl Derfler. The sound is tight and focused, containing the emotional force of the songs like a pressure cooker contains an imminent explosion.
